As part of Spotify's EQUAL program, Fatoumata Diawara has been chosen to represent female artists in Africa for the month of June. A recognition that highlights her new album Massa.

Spotify has named Grammy nominated Malian singer, songwriter, and guitarist Fatoumata Diawara as its EQUAL Africa Artist for June, spotlighting her powerful voice at the crossroads of tradition and modernity. As part of the EQUAL programme, she represents how African women are driving visibility, opening up opportunities, and building global careers while staying true to their roots.

EQUAL is Spotify’s global initiative championing women and non binary creators in the music industry. Through dedicated playlists, editorial support, and storytelling campaigns, the programme aims to address persistent gaps in visibility and recognition while amplifying the next generation of voices.

For this month’s spotlight, Spotify invited Fatoumata to share her journey, influences, and advice with younger artists. Across a series of portraits and quotes, she reflects on independence, creativity, and the power of representation.

A distinctive voice bridging Mali and the world

Fatoumata Diawara has become one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary African music, blending the rhythms and storytelling of Mali with a wide range of global influences, from blues and folk to rock, jazz, and modern production. She describes her sound as rooted in Malian traditions yet open to new ideas, a musical journey that is both deeply African and universally human.

Her songs often address themes such as identity, resilience, and women’s rights, while her performances are known for their emotional intensity and bold visual aesthetics. Over the years, she has collaborated widely and built a strong international profile, bringing her music to audiences across Africa, Europe, and beyond.

In the EQUAL campaign communication, Fatoumata shares how picking up a guitar was a turning point for her sense of agency and expression. She describes the instrument as a tool of independence, a way to claim space and speak with her own voice, a message that deeply aligns with EQUAL’s mission to elevate women’s creative power.

“The power you are looking for is already within you”

As part of the EQUAL activation, Spotify invited Fatoumata Diawara to address younger generations of women artists. Her message is empowering and practical, rooted in her own experience of navigating a male dominated industry.
