Tru Thoughts, Brighton’s sound without borders
Founded in 1999 by Robert Luis and Paul Jonas, Tru Thoughts started underneath Luis’s staircase with a simple mantra: music first, business second. Before long, the business outgrew those humble beginnings. Fuelled by Brighton’s vibrant club culture and a series of packed-out nights organised by the pair, the label quickly grew alongside a thriving local community.
What began as a home for local talent soon expanded far beyond the South Coast. At a time when Brighton was largely associated with the big beat explosion, the city’s flashy, sample heavy club signature, Tru Thoughts was carving out its own lane, championing artists working across jazz, soul, funk, hip-hop, downtempo and countless spaces in between.
Over the years, the label has introduced audiences to artists including Bonobo, Quantic, Alice Russell, Moonchild, The Hot 8 Brass Band, Sly5thAve, Nostalgia 77 and Hidden Orchestra. Some became defining voices of their scenes. Others built worlds entirely of their own. Together, they helped establish Tru Thoughts as one of independent music’s most trusted homes for discovery.
While Brighton remains firmly at its heart, the label’s reach has become increasingly global. Twenty-five years on, that spirit of curiosity remains intact, with a new generation of artists such as Steven Bamidele, Gayance, Tara Lily, WheelUP and Footshooter continuing to push the catalogue into exciting territory.
Still proudly independent, Tru Thoughts has never been interested in staying within the lines. Instead, it has spent a quarter-century following great music wherever it leads.
The partnership with IDOL
This new partnership marks the beginning of an exciting chapter for both teams. IDOL will provide worldwide digital distribution for Tru Thoughts, excluding the United States and Japan, supporting both its celebrated catalogue and forthcoming releases.
