IDOL is proud to partner with Mexican Summer, the Brooklyn-based label celebrated for 15 years of fearless creativity and a genre-defying roster that continues to shape the future of independent music.

In the ever-evolving world of independent music, few labels have carved out a space as unique as Mexican Summer. Founded in 2009 by Keith Abrahamsson and Andres Santo Domingo, the Brooklyn-based imprint has built a reputation for pushing creative boundaries, cultivating a diverse roster of genre-defying artists, and embracing the limitless possibilities of music. Now with 15 years’ experience, Mexican Summer continues to champion the future of independent music with the same adventurous spirit that defined its early days.

A Label Built on Artistic Instinct

Born as an extension of Kemado Records, Mexican Summer began as a limited-edition vinyl subscription service before evolving into a label that helped define the indie sound of the 2010s. Signing and developing artists like Best Coast, Washed Out, and Real Estate, the label quickly gained a reputation for spotting singular talents early on. From Kurt Vile’s early solo work—long before he became a household name—to Weyes Blood’s cinematic pop and Allah-Las’ vintage West Coast psych, Mexican Summer has always trusted its gut, giving artists the space to create without constraints.

With a clear focus on artistry over commercial pressures, the label has nurtured long-term creative relationships, allowing musicians to explore and experiment freely. Its catalog grew rapidly, reaching over 200 releases in just five years, featuring now a diverse lineup that includes Jessica Pratt, Cate Le Bon, and Devendra Banhart, among many others.

In an interview for Rough Trade, Keith Abrahamsson explained:

"I would say that there isn’t one artist on the roster that I don’t consider a friend. The music is always foundational to any partnership we will enter into, but taking the time to get to know the artist personally and really understand their vision is so important."

More Than Just a Record Label

Beyond signing great artists, Mexican Summer has consistently expanded its creative reach. In 2011, it launched Gary’s Electric Studio, providing artists with a dedicated space to record and collaborate in Brooklyn. The label also co-founded Software Recording Co. with Daniel Lopatin (aka Oneohtrix Point Never), giving experimental electronic music a home. And through Anthology Recordings, Mexican Summer has reissued everything from forgotten folk gems to avant-garde curiosities, ensuring that musical history remains alive and accessible.

One of its boldest projects was Marfa Myths, a multidisciplinary festival in Texas that ran from 2014 to 2019. Set in the remote arts hub of Marfa, the event brought together musicians, visual artists, and filmmakers, creating an immersive experience unlike any other. Each year, the festival hosted a unique collaborative residency, bringing together artists for unexpected creative pairings. The Myths EPs have featured Connan Mockasin and Devonté Hynes (Blood Orange, Lightspeed Champion), Ariel Pink and Weyes Blood, Dungen and Woods, as well as Cate Le Bon and Bradford Cox (Deerhunter). These projects have resulted in bold, genre-blurring releases that capture the spirit of artistic experimentation.

The partnership with IDOL

For fifteen years, Mexican Summer has been a trusted home for artists seeking to break free from industry norms. By fostering an environment where musicians can thrive artistically while remaining independent, the label has cemented its place as a cornerstone of the modern indie landscape. Now, as it enters a new chapter through its global partnership with IDOL, Mexican Summer is set to expand its reach while staying true to its artist-first philosophy.

Through this partnership, Mexican Summer will receive worldwide digital distribution, as well as marketing and audience development services tailored to its roster. IDOL will support Mexican Summer’s frontline and catalog releases. Its diverse roster includes artists such as Cate Le Bon, Hayden Pedigo, Sessa, Jessica Pratt, Connan Mockasin, L’Rain, Photay, and Zsela, among others.

This will help the label unlock new international audiences and engage online fan communities, further strengthening its global presence while ensuring its artists continue to thrive.

Keith Abrahamsson, label president & co-founder at Mexican Summer, said:

“Our new partnership with IDOL ushers in a dynamic new phase for our label. As the music industry continues to evolve, we'll be working alongside their visionary team to chart new territory.
